How to check whether your phone is unlocked
Reviewed October 3, 2026
A carrier lock restricts a phone to a particular provider. Checking the lock status is one step in preparing to use your phone elsewhere; it does not establish that the new provider supports your exact device.
Check an iPhone
Open Settings, then General, then About. Apple says that “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock means the iPhone is unlocked. If a lock remains, contact the current carrier. Apple cannot remove a carrier lock for you.
Check other phones with the current carrier
Use the official support instructions for your model and provider. Settings and unlock procedures vary. Ask whether your device is eligible and whether any payment or account requirements remain. Do not assume that paying off a device completes every required step.
Then check compatibility
Use the receiving carrier's official compatibility checker for your exact phone. Ask about SIM or eSIM setup and the features you need before purchasing a plan. Keep your device identifier private and enter it only in an official provider tool or verified sales process.
For the full preparation list, read the bring-your-own-phone checklist. For transferring a number, use the number transfer guide.
