Bring your own phone: a checklist before switching

Reviewed October 3, 2026

Keeping a phone you already like can simplify shopping for a new plan. Start with three questions: is the device unlocked, will the new carrier support it, and what do you still owe on it? Treat each as a separate check before purchasing service.

1. Confirm the unlock status

On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About. Apple says that “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock means it is unlocked. If it is locked, contact the current carrier; Apple cannot unlock it for you. For other phones, use your carrier's official instructions for the specific model.

Unlock rules differ by provider and account type. AT&T, for example, lists payment and eligibility requirements for its devices. Check the current policy for your own account rather than assuming that a working or fully paid phone is ready to move immediately.

2. Ask the receiving carrier to check compatibility

Find your exact model and use the new provider's official device checker. You may need the device's IMEI. Enter that identifier only on the provider's official checker or share it through its verified sales process; do not post it publicly. Ask about the features you actually need, such as hotspot use, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM support.

3. Work out the cost of leaving

Review the device installment balance and the terms attached to any monthly credits. Ask your current provider for the amount due if you switch now. If a new offer includes reimbursement, request its eligibility rules, required documents, payment method and timing in writing before relying on it.

4. Plan activation

  • Confirm whether you will receive a physical SIM or use an eSIM.
  • Back up information you do not want to lose.
  • Make sure you can access the account associated with the number you are moving.
  • Keep activation instructions available on a second screen or on paper.
  • After setup, test calls, texts and data in places you regularly use the phone.

What to ask during a sales call

“I want to keep this phone. Can you confirm that this exact model is supported, tell me all upfront charges, and explain the total monthly price without a new-device purchase?” Write down the answer before deciding. An attractive plan is useful only if it works with your device and budget.
