How to switch phone carriers and keep your number
Reviewed October 3, 2026
Switching a phone plan involves two separate decisions: choosing the service you want and moving your existing number. Get the new plan details first, then organize the transfer so you do not lose access to the number people already use to reach you.
Keep the old line active
Do not cancel the line you want to transfer before the new provider finishes the number transfer. Ask the receiving provider to check whether it can accept your number and explain the process for your account. T-Mobile and Verizon both advise keeping service active during a transfer.
Prepare your transfer details
Have your current account number, billing information and the transfer PIN or other authorization required by your provider ready. A transfer PIN may differ from your ordinary account password. Use your current carrier's official account tools to obtain it, and provide it only through the receiving provider's secure transfer process.
Separate the phone from the number
Keeping a number does not automatically mean your current phone will work on the new network. Ask the receiving carrier to check the device's compatibility and confirm its unlock status. If you plan to replace the phone, settle on the device and delivery arrangements before choosing your transfer date.
Use this transfer-day checklist
- Choose a time when you can follow activation instructions and be without service temporarily.
- Keep your old phone, new SIM or eSIM instructions, and account details within reach.
- Follow the new provider's transfer instructions rather than canceling the old line yourself.
- After confirmation, test incoming and outgoing calls, texts, and mobile data with Wi-Fi off.
- Check the old account for remaining watches, tablets, or other lines you still need to manage.
Compare the complete cost
Write down the quoted service price, device payments, one-time charges and the conditions for any discounts. Ask what happens to your current phone balance and promotional credits when you leave. Keep copies of the offer and your final bills so you can compare the actual outcome with the quote.
Before calling: know how many lines you want to move, which phones you want to keep, and what you currently pay. Those details make a sales conversation more useful.
